Homeowners in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, have expressed shock after receiving property tax bills that, for many, were significantly higher than anticipated. Some residents reported increases of several thousand dollars, with one homeowner receiving a bill totaling over $9,600. 

City officials explained that the increases are primarily due to citywide property reassessments and school referendums approved by voters. While some households saw decreases, most affected residents are now considering installment payment options to manage the larger bills.

Neighbors in Wauwatosa. They tell us they were shocked after receiving this year's property tax bill. I thought maybe would go up 1000 by 2000. I was just like that's a lot. Our Megan Lee spoke with Nancy and Cynthia about their bills and breaks down why there were so many changes this year. A viewer reached out to us on Facebook, saying that there was a property tax increase here in Wauwatosa, so I came to City Hall myself to ask about that increase and to see if any other residents are in the same boat. These are not a couple $100. These are thousands of dollars for people. Nancy Brennan is indeed in the same boat as other homeowners who were seeing a higher bill. I thought maybe would go up 1000. 2000 I was just like. That's a lot like many of her neighbors. She received her property tax bill Friday morning in the mail. It'll be $9608 and 52 cents. Something like that, and I was like, oh, this graph from the city shows the breakdown for this year's bill. Major changes come from citywide property reassessments and school referendums passed by voters. How do they expect these people within two weeks to just come up with? Whatever it was going to be different. Nancy is a real estate agent in the area and understands the importance of investing in schools in city services. However, she thinks the reassessments should happen every year. They should be doing like other municipalities do every year so that it's just an a little increments. Meanwhile, the increase didn't hit every household feeling pretty good because it went down. About what did we say here? About $400 since the apartment has called Tosa home for 27 years, it knows the pain of a higher bill might have done that in the past and now they're coming down so. Just trust and it'll be good for now. Residents will have to pay in full or you can pay in January, March and May, so I think a lot of people are going to do that.
