A major winter storm has impacted large portions of the United States, bringing destructive winds, heavy rain, and blizzard conditions. The storm has caused at least one fatality in Idaho, left tens of thousands without power in Washington state, and fueled wildfires in eastern Colorado, where over 14,000 acres have burned overnight.

Blizzard conditions have been reported in North Dakota, while winter alerts are in effect across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. The storm is expected to continue moving east, affecting major travel corridors and airports, with damaging winds and hazardous conditions forecast for the coming days.

Some potentially dangerous weather is making its way across the country. CBS News meteorologist Rob Marciano is tracking it. A powerful winter storm is barreling across the country. Destructive and deadly winds ripping through the western U.S. In Idaho, a 55-year-old man died when this tree fell on his home. And tens of thousands are still without power in Washington state after days of steady rain and winds gusting up to 112 miles per hour. The system blasting across the Rocky Mountains, whipping up wildfires in eastern Colorado. Firefighters struggling to keep them from burning out of control. At least three fires burning in Yuma County alone, scorching more than 14,000 acres overnight. And blowing snow creating a blizzard in North Dakota, at times blinding drivers on Interstate 29 in whiteout conditions. The entire state of Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, and dozens of counties in Michigan are under winter alerts right now. And that entire mess is heading into the zones that have the busiest airports tomorrow. So travel is going to be not so much fun. The winds are the big story with us, as you saw in that piece. Check out what happened the last 24 hours of damaging winds yet again. The system is not letting up 101 mile per hour gusts in Rapid City, 102 in Golden, Colorado, and into parts of Nebraska and Kansas. We've got a high wind warning still up and wind advisories up for much of the central and midwest, the Ohio River Valley, and into the northeast up to 65 mile per hour winds. So let's track this out. We're getting rain with some intense thunderstorms in some spots through Louisville, getting up through Detroit, pushing through Pittsburgh overnight. By tomorrow morning in through D.C., eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. This is the morning rush going to be nasty. Rain and wind and wind behind this thing as well. So we pump the temperatures up and then we drop them down for a much cooler wind weekend. But the winds continue to crank through tomorrow night. But after the cool weekend, look at we're looking at the next six to 10 days. You want a white Christmas. We are not looking at a big warm up across much of the central part of the country.
