The tools are believed to be linked to Homo erectus, suggesting that this early human species may have crossed significant ocean gaps from the Asian mainland to Sulawesi at least a million years ago.

This discovery has the potential to alter prevailing theories about early human migration in the region. While the oldest human remains in nearby Java date to around 1.6 million years ago, the possibility that these tools were brought by later, more modern humans has also been raised, leaving some questions about their origins.

For archaeologists, making discoveries in Sulawesi is not a surprise. The Indonesian island is, after all, home to the world's oldest cave art, dating back more than 50,000 years. But the latest findings, these tools, are a leap back in history. More than one million years back. We think it was probably Homo erectus. And we think Homo erectus somehow got from the Asian mainland across a significant ocean gap to this island, Sulawesi, at least one million years ago. This discovery could potentially change the way we view early humans and their migrations. The oldest human remains in the region were found in Java. It's believed humans arrived there 1.6 million years ago, after a long migration from Africa. Ancient humans migrated due to a number of factors, primarily climate change, which resulted in a lack of food source. These humans moved around to find new places to find food, where there were sources that could sustain them. So they migrated. If they ran out of food in Java, they'd move out. There are other theories. There is a possibility that these record old tools were brought to the island later by other, more modern humans.
