The dog, equipped with a life jacket and other safety measures, assists in swimmer rescues on the beach. Historically, poodles were used for water rescue, and Nilo's training has helped him overcome initial fears of crowds and loud noises. Over time, he has improved his swimming technique, now performing both vertical and horizontal swimming with proficiency.

This is Nilo, the newest member of a lifeguarding team in southern Spain. He's the first and only poodle in a squad of Labradors, Reuters reports. The level one rescue dog takes all precautions, wearing a life jacket, putting on sunscreen and staying hydrated. Poodles were historically used for water rescue, with the name poodle coming from the German verb poodlen, meaning to splash. Initially scared of large crowds and loud noises, Nilo has come on leaps and bounds in his training. He has gone from swimming basically vertically, which is a way of swimming that is not correct, to swimming totally horizontally. He does both perfectly.
