A young man was killed in a drive-by shooting while walking with another person in Fitzroy, Melbourne's inner north. The incident occurred outside the school the victim once attended and across the road from a police station that was closed to the public at the time. 

Police believe the attack was targeted and are seeking information about the silver SUV involved and the other person who was with the victim. Despite rapid response from police and ambulance crews, the victim could not be saved. The community has responded with tributes and calls for increased police station accessibility.

Security vision released by police shows the victim, his identity protected by a blur, he's walking with another person in Fitzroy, in Melbourne's inner north. Moments later, he was killed in a drive-by shooting. 12 o'clock in the morning, we've got two persons walking down the street when shots are fired from a moving vehicle at those two persons. It certainly appears to be targeted. Police say they aren't sure how many people were in the shooter's car, a silver SUV, which didn't stop. At the crime scene, forensics examined a Toyota Corolla hatch with a smashed window. Officers are hoping the other person the victim was with can come forward. The victim was killed on the street out the front of the school he used to go to. It's just across the road from a police station, which was closed to the public last night, but one officer who was there heard the shooting and rushed to help. I think it's one minute before he's providing first aid, and I think within a couple of minutes, there's more police. Within 10 minutes, there's multiple police, Ambulance Victoria. Their best efforts not enough to save the youth. Many locals today were calling for the station to be open to the public 24 hours a day. Whether the station was open to the public or, as it was, closed to the public but still had a member there, I can't say that would have made any difference. Chaplains were deployed in the area this morning to offer counselling for the grieving community. The flower bouquets slowly growing as the day went on. Rory Campbell, 10 News.
