Authorities in Tanzania have deployed police and military forces in major cities to deter planned protests related to the violent suppression of demonstrations following the October elections. The government urged citizens to stay home for Independence Day, resulting in deserted streets and heightened security presence. 

Reports indicate that since mid-November, numerous individuals have been detained for allegedly calling for protests, with hundreds killed and over 2,000 detained in the aftermath of the disputed poll. The government also cancelled Independence Day celebrations, redirecting funds to infrastructure repairs amid ongoing concerns about restrictions on the right to peaceful assembly.

The streets in major cities across Tanzania were deserted on Tuesday as the government urged citizens to stay at home for Independence Day celebrations. Police and soldiers were deployed in force across the country to prevent planned protests against the violent suppression of demonstrations around the October elections. In the last couple of weeks, the Tanzanian government has sent a strong message that people should not go out onto the streets and protest and express themselves about the violence that took place during the October 29th elections. This is very problematic because people have a right to express themselves and to talk about things that concern them. I anticipate that the Tanzanian authorities are going to try to block people from going out onto the streets and demonstrating because they've sent a message that that's not something that they tolerate. Hundreds of people were killed and more than 2,000 others detained in days of protests over the ruling party's victory in the disputed poll, which also saw President Simia Suluhu Hassan re-elected. Since around mid-November, we've documented a number of cases of people being picked up from their homes and off the streets by plain-clothed men. A number of those people were then reported by the police as having been arrested by them. Those people, the police said, were calling for these protests to happen, for people to come onto the streets. This is really concerning because people have the right to call for peaceful protests, which is what the D-9 protests are supposed to be. It's just, in my opinion, a sign that the Tanzanian authorities are increasingly intolerant of people's right to assemble. Last month, the government cancelled Independence Day celebrations, saying the funds would instead be used to repair damaged infrastructure.
