Amidst the chaos of modern life, Jennie Brennan and Jacob Peter have found solace in an unexpected activity: rescuing and nursing injured pigeons back to health.

Jenny Brennan and Jacob Peter have taken on the task of rescuing and rehabilitating pigeons in London. Brennan began feeding pigeons during lockdown after learning that the birds were struggling to find food. Over time, she noticed many suffered from injuries and contacted Peter through Facebook, who was already involved in bird rescue.

Urban pigeons commonly experience "string foot," a condition caused when litter such as thread, fishing line, or human hair becomes entangled around their toes. If untreated, this can result in the loss of toes or feet. Brennan and Peter use seeds to attract the pigeons, gently cover them with a kitchen towel, and remove debris using scissors or pliers.

Both volunteers tend to pigeons three to four times a week, often responding to reports from the public. They highlight that string foot is a man-made problem, emphasising the need for human intervention to address it. For Brennan, helping pigeons is a meaningful way to make a positive impact in the face of broader challenges.

If left untreated, the birds can lose a toe or even a whole foot. Using seeds to attract pigeons, they gently cover them with a kitchen towel before carefully removing any constricting debris with scissors or pliers. It's a man-made problem and therefore I feel like someone needs to take responsibility to try and correct that problem as much as possible because it is unfortunately ubiquitous. The pair of volunteers tend to the birds three to four times a week, often responding to tips from concerned members of the public. Taking pigeons as much as I do means that I have little friends everywhere I go. So if I'm busy running stressful errands and I'm feeling a bit sorry for myself and I see a couple of pigeons passing, it just brightens my day up.
