Paris voters backed a proposal from the capital's socialist mayor Anne Hidalgo to triple parking charges on hefty SUV-style cars, according to official results from city hall.

Anne Hidalgo has described it as a clear choice of Parisians. After heading to the polls on Sunday, Paris voters supported a proposal from the city's mayor to triple parking charges for large, heavy SUVs. It's an ecological issue, but it's also a societal issue, and it's about how cities need to evolve in a changing environment. I think it's great that we can ask ourselves the question and change our behaviour, even if it may be harsh for some. I think it's a bit absurd to have a huge car in a city that's already very polluted, where there's very little space, and beyond the impact it may have in Paris, there's also a bit of a symbolic side to saying that it's a bad idea overall in cities. Parisians voted nearly 55% in favour of the new charges. But just 5.7% of the 1.3 million eligible voters took part in the referendum. Not all of them are happy. It would be around 200 euros per day, life costs a lot, children cost a lot, so it will be just too expensive. I'm a shopkeeper, and I'm very upset by the number of customers we've lost after the closure of some streets, the removal of parking spots. So I'm completely against this increase in parking charges. SUVs in city streets have also sparked debates in other capitals, including London and Dublin. The International Energy Agency says SUVs now account for almost half of all new car sales worldwide. But according to the agency, they use around 20% more fuel than the average vehicle and released almost 1 billion tonnes of CO2 worldwide in 2022, around double Brazil's total emissions.

Floods have killed at least 58 people in southern Brazil. Nearly 70,000 have been forced from their homes. Tens of thousands of people have been left without drinking water or electricity. It's the worst flooding the region has seen in more than 80 years.
