The distribution of food is taking place in areas guarded by Israeli forces, and there have been reports from Gaza medics that dozens of Palestinians have been shot and killed while trying to access aid. The Israeli military has stated that its forces fired warning shots to disperse crowds that posed a threat and is reviewing reports of civilian casualties.

Humanitarian organizations have criticized the current aid system, saying it forces people to risk their lives to obtain food. The European Union's diplomatic service has highlighted concerns about Israel's actions in Gaza, including denial of humanitarian aid and attacks on medical facilities. UNICEF has warned of a man-made drought due to fuel shortages, with only 40% of drinking water facilities operational and a significant increase in malnutrition among children.

Palestinians seek food aid in Gaza as hunger crisis grows

Large crowds of Palestinians gathered around eight trucks in Gaza's Bethlehem Monday. Some climbed on board the trucks to get food as a hunger crisis deepened following Israel's military assault on Gaza. In amongst the commotion Monday, an injured man was carried away on a stretcher. It was unclear how he got hurt or how badly he was injured. Israel has been channeling most of its aid through a U.S. and Israeli-backed group, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, or GHF, which operates several distribution sites in areas guarded by Israeli forces. Gaza medics say those soldiers have shot and killed dozens of Palestinians trying to get food from aid trucks in recent days. The Israeli military has said its forces opened fire and fired warning shots to disperse people who approached areas where troops were operating, posing a threat. It said it was reviewing reports of casualties among civilians. Humanitarian groups say the GHF system forces people to risk their lives by entering combat zones to access food. Twenty-eight-year-old Palestinian Mohamed Abdel-Jawad is among those seeking aid. MOHAMED ABDEL-JAWAD, Gaza Humanitarian Foundation Member, Gaza Humanitarian Foundation I wait for the food. In a review of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, the EU's diplomatic service pointed out Israel's shortcomings in Gaza, such as denial of humanitarian aid, attacks on hospitals and medical facilities, displacement and lack of accountability. Israel's foreign ministry has rejected the EU report as a, quote, moral and methodological failure. Meanwhile, UNICEF warns Gaza is facing a man-made drought due to a shortage of fuel to operate wells and desalination plants. A UNICEF spokesperson said only 40% of drinking water production facilities remain functional and soon children will begin to die of thirst. The UN Children's Agency also reported a 50% increase in children aged six months to five years admitted for treatment of malnutrition from April to May in Gaza, and half a million people going hungry.
