The UN high commission for refugees says Pakistan must give Afghan nationals more time but after the recent fighting with Afghan forces on the border, the government is determined to ensure that Afghan citizens leave Pakistan in less than a week.

The government has announced that no extensions will be granted to undocumented residents, including Afghans, and a single-document regime requiring visas will be enforced.

Many Afghans, some of whom have lived their entire lives in Pakistan, are now preparing to return to Afghanistan, despite having few resources and no homes to return to. The decision is framed by Pakistani authorities as necessary for national security and border management, but has left many refugees facing uncertainty and hardship.

Jalal-e-Refugee Camp was once home to thousands of Afghan families. This is where they found protection when they fled decades ago after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. They struggled to rebuild their lives from scratch. Many were born and raised here and spent a lifetime knowing no other country to call home. We are deeply grateful to the people of Pakistan for hosting us for 45 years. We never imagined we would have to leave, but now we're told to return without even enough money to rent a truck. These camps provided the manpower to fight the Soviet invasion as the U.S. pumped in billions of dollars to wage a war against its arch-rival. The Pakistani government has denotified the Afghan refugees in Pakistan. That means that these people will no longer enjoy a refugee status. The State Minister for Interior says, in today's world no country can allow anyone to reside without legal documentation, and Pakistan is no exception. The government's decided that no extensions will be granted to anyone, whether Afghan nationals or other illegal immigrants. We must implement a single-document regime, that's the visa. Like all other nations, we too are deeply concerned about the safety of our citizens and the security of our borders. Everywhere you see people are packing. Mohammed is making a tally and gathering his family household belongings. Bedding, clothes and furniture are their life's earnings. I was born here and built a life with whatever little we had, but now the government wants us to leave. We have packed everything and are waiting for the border to reopen, to return to Afghanistan, a war-torn country where we have no home and nowhere to go. Most do not complain about the local people and say they will carry with them fond memories of a lifetime spent in Pakistan. But they will go with painful memories of the humiliation of forced eviction by a state that once used them to serve its strategic interests.
