Victorian search and rescue teams responded to two separate water emergencies on Christmas Day, saving a total of six people. In the first incident, a 51-year-old woman and her 17-year-old stepson drifted over 10 kilometers on paddleboards in Port Phillip Bay before being rescued after more than three hours.

In a second incident, a mother and her two teenage daughters were swept away while trying to recover a kayak in Coronella. Rescue crews located and winched the trio to safety within an hour. All three were wearing life jackets, which authorities credited as a key factor in their survival.

A Christmas Day adventure that went horribly wrong. Two paddleboarders escaped a dire situation. No doubt their lives were saved during this incident, just given the conditions. The 51-year-old woman and her 17-year-old stepson were drifting for more than three hours. They'd received the paddleboards as Christmas presents. They underestimated the treacherous conditions, which would test him, even for the search team. The air wing up in, you know, the air in 35 knot winds as well, even though it is a capable aircraft, it still moves around a little bit, plus our crews on vessels, sort of, you know, bouncing around in Bass Strait looking for them. The pair headed out from Port Arlington, south-west of Melbourne. They drifted more than 10km across Port Phillip Bay. Today, they're still trying to come to terms with how quickly a beautiful, carefree afternoon turned into an almost tragedy. The two of them exhausted, shaken and grateful to the search team, saying the decisive and quick action led not only to our rescue, but our survival. Thank you so much. Help from above was also needed by a mother and her two teenage daughters. RUMBLE The trio had been trying to recover a drifting kayak in Coronella, an hour and a half south-east of Melbourne, that were quickly swept away by the current and wind. Rescue teams able to find them and winch them to safety within an hour. I think they're quite in shock and panic. The two that were still in the water were obviously in a state where they were quite cold. But all OK. They're saving grace. All three were wearing life jackets.
