These incidents are part of a rising number of orca interactions reported since 2020 in the waters off Portugal and Spain, totaling over 600 cases.

Scientists believe these encounters are not deliberate attacks on humans but are likely caused by a small group of young male orcas engaging in rough play. Experts recommend that boaters avoid these incidents by staying informed about orca locations and keeping a safe distance.

Scientists say the whales are not attacking humans on purpose but that a small group of young male orcas are bored and simply roughhousing. In the same way, I don't know, maybe young boys like to push things and smash things. I think there's something in here too where there's some pleasure in the power they have over another object. This expert doesn't believe the group will teach whales outside of their pods. Oh my god. Canadians have had close encounters with killer whales too but it's not as common. In 2017, these boaters got caught in the middle of a pod of orcas on the hunt. The best way to avoid these incidents, experts say, is know where the whales are and stay far, far away.
