In the shadow of St. Peter's Basilica, tens of thousands of mourners gathered to bid a solemn farewell to Pope Francis, who led the Roman Catholic Church for more than a decade. Dubbed the "People's Pope," Francis was admired worldwide for his advocacy on behalf of marginalized communities. Tribute was paid by global dignitaries, including U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who convened a meeting prior to the funeral service. 

The ceremony was rich with tradition, characterized by prayers, tributes, and ancient rituals. However, Pope Francis had expressed wishes to diverge from some customary practices. In his final testament, he requested a simpler burial without decoration and a humble coffin design, reflecting his lifelong reputation for humility and commitment to Christian values over material extravagance.

Following the funeral mass, a rare papal procession through Rome took place, marking a departure from convention, as the bodies of Popes are customarily interred at the Vatican. The procession journeyed past several iconic Roman landmarks, concluding at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where Pope Francis wished to be laid to rest. A period of nine days of mourning is set to commence, with daily masses held in his honor before the conclave meets to select his successor.

O God, immortal shepherds of souls, look at your people's prayers and grant that your servant Pope Francis, who presided over your church in charity, may, with the flock entrusted to his care, receive from your mercy the reward of a faithful steward. The papal funeral service was comprised of prayers, tributes and rituals, following in the footsteps of traditions going back centuries. Nine days of mourning will follow, with mass held every day in his memory. But Pope Francis had also requested breaks from tradition. Instead of an elaborate coffin of cypress, lead and oak, he'd asked for a more modest design. Francis had a reputation for being humble and rejecting the luxuries of high office. He said he wanted to be seen as a follower of Christ, rather than a powerful man of this world. After the funeral mass, another unusual step. A papal procession through Rome, something that hasn't been seen in generations. The bodies of popes are usually interred in the Vatican, but Pope Francis wanted to be buried elsewhere.
