A federal judge has sentenced former Alaska Airlines pilot Joseph Emerson to time served and three years of supervised release for trying to cut a plane's engines during a flight in 2023.

The incident occurred in October 2023, when Emerson, while off duty and seated in the cockpit jump seat, attempted to pull the plane's fuel suppression handles during a flight from Everett, Washington to San Francisco.

The flight crew restrained Emerson, preventing a potential emergency and ensuring the safety of all 84 people on board. In court, Emerson acknowledged responsibility for his actions, and the judge decided against further jail time, granting him credit for time already served.

Former Alaska airlines pilot, Joseph Emerson will not spend any additional time behind bars after receiving his sentence for a single count of interfering with flight crew members and attendants. That's something he pleaded guilty to a couple of months ago. Now to refresh your memory, Joseph Emerson was an off duty pilot seated in the jump seat in the cockpit of a flight from Everett, Washington to San Francisco back in October, 2023. While seated there, Emerson reportedly ripped off his headset, said I'm not okay, and reached up to grab the plane's fuel suppression handles, which would have cut off fuel to the plane's jet engines. Now thankfully the crew on board that flight restrained Emerson and held him until the plane landed and he was taken into custody, essentially saving, potentially I should say, saving the lives of Emerson and the 83 other people on board that flight that day. Now today in court, we heard from the federal government, which said Emerson has tried to paint himself as a victim in this situation. His defense attorney said that's not true. He's admitted to being anything but a victim. He understands the lives he put at risk and has taken full responsibility for the situation. Now after hearing from both sides today, the federal judge decided to give Emerson credit for time served and three years supervised release for that single charge.
