The Oakland Ballers, a minor league baseball team, recently experimented with using artificial intelligence to manage a game. The AI, developed by Distillery and led by CEO Andrei Kudievsky, was tasked with making lineup decisions using a century of baseball data. While the AI's choices closely mirrored those of human coach Aaron Miles, some players expressed discomfort with the process. The experiment lasted only one game, after which the team returned to traditional management. The Ballers went on to win the Pioneer League championship under Coach Miles, marking Oakland's first baseball title since 1989.

Only two years old, the feisty, full of fun, Oakland Ballers are already beloved. Players, fans, and the team's owners are doing their best to fill a big hole left after Major League's Oakland A's skipped town. The Ballers, nicknamed the Oakland B's, play in the minor Pioneer League. Facing off against the likes of the Missoula Paddleheads, the Ogden Utah Raptors, and the Idaho Falls Chuckers. The Ballers, though a new team, have been holding their own, thanks in part to coach Aaron Miles. You played for five Major League Baseball clubs, won a World Series playing for the Cardinals. You might think he's seen it all, but not here. Earlier this month, the team's owners told him they were benching him. Artificial intelligence, A.I., would coach one game. A.I. would pick who would play. And who would not. A baseball first. 100 years of historic baseball data loaded into a computer program that made the decisions. Coach Miles learned about the lineup from an iPad. You know, it's like somebody that's going to tell you how to do your job. What did the players think? The players were, you know, I don't think they liked it. Even though it came up with a very similar lineup that I would usually do, the players kind of took offense to it, you know, a little bit. Because they were like, oh, the A.I. picked so-and-so over me, you know what I mean? My vision is that professional sports will definitely be augmented by A.I. 400 miles away in Los Angeles, Andrei Kudievsky was behind it all. He is the CEO of Distillery, an A.I. integration company. So manager Aaron Miles has played on five professional baseball teams. Do you really think that A.I. knows more about baseball than he does? Realistically, A.I. has the broader knowledge and deeper knowledge than anyone in the world, human beings, about anything and everything. So my answer is yes. However, A.I. is not necessarily here to replace the coach. At the ballpark on A.I. game day, everything seemed normal enough. But things did get tense. You know, it was a very close game. But at one point you were losing the game with the iPad coaching. You know, you're sitting back and you're kind of thinking, you know, do I have to pretend like I'm not getting service on this iPad or pretend like I'm not getting the, and make another move and just say, hey, you know, technology failed us in the moment. Team co-owner Paul Friedman weighed in. We're going to fire the A.I. after day one. They have no feelings, so it's going to be an easy conversation. And that's what happened, even after the ballers pulled out a win. The A.I. was on top of every move that should have been made. It was an experiment with little to lose. The ballers had already won 70 games this season and were headed to the playoffs. Last weekend with the Pioneer League championship on the line, the artificial intelligence was benched. After losing the first two games of the series to the Idaho Chuckers, the Oakland Ballers came back with Coach Miles calling the shots. With a sellout crowd of 4,100 watching, the Ballers won three straight playoff games to capture the Pioneer League title. The Ballers. No A.I. tonight.
