Mamdani announced the trip in a video posted to social media, where he addressed criticism and assured viewers he would return to New York by the end of the month. 

Mamdani, a 33-year-old state assemblyman, has faced opposition from both rivals and members of his own party since defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo for the Democratic nomination. He will compete against Cuomo and incumbent mayor Eric Adams in the upcoming election. Mamdani was born in Kampala to Indian parents, moved to New York at age seven, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018.
