Artificial intelligence technology giant Nvidia announced a new endeavor that it says will be revolutionary. Emily Bary, MarketWatch's assistant managing editor, joins CBS News with more.

The release of Open AI's ChatGPT has accelerated the development of artificial intelligence and warnings about its impact on society.

Rise of AI

Nvidia has introduced the Vera Rubin platform, a new AI supercomputing architecture designed to deliver significant improvements in performance and energy efficiency. The platform, which is now in full production and expected to launch later in the year, consists of six chips and is intended to support advanced AI applications beyond chatbots, including robotics and self-driving cars.

The company is also expanding its presence in the autonomous vehicle sector, forming a new partnership with Mercedes to pursue self-driving technology. While industry leaders such as Tesla's Elon Musk acknowledge potential long-term competition, Nvidia is leveraging its resources to position itself at the forefront of AI and autonomous innovation.

All right, have you heard about this? NVIDIA is hoping to maintain its dominance in the AI industry with a powerful new platform called Vera Rubin. The chipmaker's CEO says this truly is the next frontier. Listen. I would not be surprised if the industry would like us to make this format and this structure an industry standard in the future. This is completely revolutionary. This is how we were able to deliver such a gigantic step up in performance. Hmm, but let's fact check that. Emily Barry is an assistant managing editor at MarketWatch. She covers technology and joins us now to speak about this. Emily, good morning. So how significant could this new supercomputing architecture be for NVIDIA? I mean, this is a company that I believe is worth more than four and a half trillion dollars as you and I speak. So how seismic might this be for the company and the AI industry as a whole? Yeah, so they said yesterday that their Vera Rubin platform is in full production. That kind of puts it on track for a launch later this year. And when you think about AI right now, most people think about chat GPT, large language models like that. But the way companies are positioning things at CES, AI is getting a lot more advanced. It's moving beyond chatbots. It's getting into agents that can do tasks for you. It gets into robotics, self-driving cars. And to be able to make all that happen, you really need more powerful chips. You need more efficient chips. So that's where NVIDIA is coming from here. They say that their incredible performance benefits this chip. They say it's a lot more efficient than its predecessor. They say it's using less power, which is a big theme right now because there's concern that there won't be enough power to kind of fuel all of this AI ambition going on. So that's kind of where we are with Vera Rubin. They're positioning it as the future of AI, being able to unlock a lot more potential from the technology, and kind of putting them ahead of rivals with this whole system approach. It's actually six chips. And NVIDIA is under pressure, though. There are questions about if we're moving toward an AI bubble. Is it really worth all the investment? NVIDIA releasing a new platform to advance self-driving cars as well at CES, where all the tech companies try to be braggadocious and convince people to buy their products. So what are the expectations from that release? Yeah, so when you think about NVIDIA, you probably don't think about self-driving car technology. That's something that's maybe better associated with a company like Tesla. But NVIDIA sees a huge opportunity in self-driving cars and autonomous driving. Proponents of self-driving cars see a world where we don't own our own cars. We just hail rides from autonomous ones. So NVIDIA obviously wants to position themselves to be a part of this. Tesla's not so worried, though. Elon Musk said this could be a competitive risk five, six years into the future, but not anything to worry about in the near term. But in the meantime, NVIDIA, sorry, has a new partnership with Mercedes. They have the resources to pursue this, and they're gonna try. Very cool stuff. Can't wait till we can experience all of it.
