Hospitality workers in New South Wales are participating in a new training program designed to help them recognize and respond to sexual harassment and assault. This initiative comes as sexual assault offences at licensed venues reached a 32-year high, with nearly 400 cases reported last year. 

The government is supporting an updated Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) qualification, requiring workers to complete a refresher course every five years. The training complements existing safety programs, and all hospitality workers are expected to complete it within the next five years.

Hospitality workers are often on the front line of someone's big night out. Increasingly, that means identifying and reacting to sexual harassment and assaults. It's really nice to know that you can come into work and all the staff members are fully trained on how to help and how to support each other. Sexual assault offences reached a 32-year high last year, with nearly 400 reported at licensed venues alone. The government cracking down, backing its new and improved RSA qualification. We're committed to making sure that in opening up venues and having people going out and having a good time, they also have a safe time. In the last seven months, about a quarter of the state's hospitality workers have undertaken an online training program, helping workers understand the signs of sexual harassment. It's a different ballgame these days. Times have changed, so people's behaviours have to change. So for the training that's come in now, it was certainly needed. It complements programs already in place, such as Ask for Angela or Think Safe to Drink Safe. For workers to maintain their RSA accreditation, they must undergo the refresher course every five years, which ensures the entire workforce is well equipped with how to best deal with any sexual harassment or assault in the workplace. We support its rollout. It's a good first step. What we would say, though, is that training staff one-off at the beginning of their hospitality career is just the beginning. There's a lot more to do.
