Hospitals across New South Wales are experiencing a significant increase in patients unable to be discharged due to a lack of available aged care or NDIS support. The number of such patients has risen from 747 to nearly 1,200 in the past year, representing a 50% surge and contributing to overcrowding and extended wait times in emergency departments.

Wyong Hospital is among the most affected, with staff reporting that patient care standards are being compromised. Statewide, over 73,000 people left hospitals without completing treatment during the winter quarter, and the median emergency department wait time reached a record high. State leaders are urging the Commonwealth to agree on a new hospital funding deal to address the crisis.

It's healthcare limbo. Patients well enough to leave, but with nowhere to go. There are some significant challenges in the system right now. None though, more than what we are facing in relation to bed block. New data shows the number of patients stranded in hospitals waiting for aged care or NDIS support increased from 747 to almost 1200. A 50% surge in just 12 months. Wyong Hospital, where ED nurse Kelly Falconer works, is among the worst affected. She says it's other patients paying the price. We've got to pull up another chair and we've got to treat them where we can. So we're still treating the patients, they're still getting care, they're just not getting the best standards of care. Across the state, more than 73,000 people left without or before completing treatment over the winter quarter. Already the busiest time for hospitals. But this year, more so. The median time between patients arriving and leaving EDs was the highest on record. Some hospitals worse than others. Westmead blew out to 7 hours and 11 minutes. There, just a quarter of the sickest patients, T2 patients, received treatment within 10 minutes. Though other hospitals, including Bankstown, Blacktown, Campbelltown and Liverpool saw improvements in treatment times. There might be small improvements, but at Westmead, the biggest hospital in the west, things are dire. And it's not good enough for this government to keep passing the buck to Canberra. State leaders will continue to put pressure on the Commonwealth to strike a new hospital funding deal when they meet on Friday morning, with all sides hoping to come up with a solution before Christmas. And I'm getting a bit sick and tired of the Commonwealth pontificating about this. Tallulah Thompson, 10 News.
