Businesses in West Valley City, Utah, have begun displaying signs that state Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is not allowed to enter without a warrant. This action follows local protests and growing concerns among residents about recent ICE activity and detentions, including the case of Jair Salis, whose detainment sparked demonstrations at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Salt Lake City.

Local activist group Salt Lake Indivisible has distributed hundreds of these signs and is working to inform business owners and individuals about the legal requirements for ICE entry. Activists emphasize that only federal warrants, not those from Homeland Security, permit ICE to enter private workplaces or homes, and they are providing educational materials to help the community understand their rights.

We've reached out to DHS several times over the past few weeks, but we've only been met with statements. People here have reactions too. Putting people in these facilities and keeping them there, it just sounds really sketchy. Sickened, I guess. I'm here picking up forms from my friends who are in the process of getting asylum, which is legal and everything, but they're worried they're going to get picked up. The detainment of Jair Salis on December 2nd led to a protest here at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in Salt Lake City. All of this is so unnecessary and so disruptive and so inhumane. And you can just have it on you. That's Sarah Buck with Salt Lake Invisible. She's one of the local activists here who are trying to help people know their rights, specifically when it comes to immigration and customs enforcement. What's happening is ICE is coming in with warrants from Homeland Security, and those are not valid. Those do not require you to allow them into your private workplaces or into your home. It needs to be a federal warrant. And so we have the examples of both so that business owners and individuals can educate themselves on that. Local businesses in West Valley City have signs like these. They say ICE is not allowed to enter without a warrant. Salt Lake Indivisible has printed out hundreds of signs just like that. It feels like some of the most important work we've done since this president was elected. And it really feels like it's bringing community together as well.
