Hundreds of unionized locomotive engineers at New Jersey Transit have walked off the job in a pay dispute, marking the first such strike at the agency in over four decades. The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, representing about 450 engineers, is seeking better wages and working conditions.

As a result of the strike, New Jersey Transit rail service has been shut down, affecting approximately 350,000 daily commuters who travel between New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. The disruption impacts not only commuters but also individuals traveling to Newark Airport, as well as fans attending events at Madison Square Garden and MetLife Stadium.

New Jersey Transit has announced a contingency plan to provide chartered buses starting from the first weekday of the strike, but has advised rail users to work from home if possible. The strike's effects are expected to be felt widely across the region as travel disruptions continue.
