CBS News obtained exclusive video from inside the control center at Newark's airport during last week's outage. Kris Van Cleave reports on what went wrong.

CBS News has released exclusive footage showing the inside of Newark Airport's air traffic control center during a recent system outage. The video depicts a 90-second period when controllers' screens went completely blank, leaving them unable to track or communicate with planes around the airport. During the outage, controllers can be heard expressing frustration and discussing the sudden loss of operational capability.

The footage also documents the moment the majority of screens were restored, allowing controllers to resume their work. This outage occurred during a particularly slow period for flights at Newark, minimizing its immediate impact on air traffic. A similar incident had occurred earlier at a Philadelphia-area facility, where a system failure also left controllers unable to communicate and monitor flights, prompting about six controllers to seek trauma leave.

A persistent staffing shortage has contributed to a significant number of flight cancellations and delays. Addressing concerns about safety, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that while efficiency is important, maintaining safety is the top priority, emphasizing the presence of multiple redundancies throughout the system.

Additional information indicates that a separate communications outage recently affected a Denver-area air traffic control facility. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), controllers quickly implemented emergency procedures, restoring service within approximately two minutes, with no danger to aircraft or delayed flights reported. Efforts to resolve issues at the Philadelphia facility are ongoing, and Department of Transportation officials are holding meetings with airlines to discuss reducing flights at Newark to alleviate delays.

The video also shows the moment when most of the air traffic control facility's screens came back up. This outage happened at a particularly slow time for flights around Newark Airport. But on April 28, a similar outage at the same Philadelphia-area facility hit during the middle of the day. It also left controllers unable to communicate and their screens also briefly went dark. About a half-dozen controllers sought trauma leave after that incident. The ongoing staffing shortage has resulted in thousands of cancellations and delays. Even the frustrations in Newark, when we've slowed traffic down, the key is not efficiency, the key is safety. Not a good scene for a visitor, hello? And CBS News has learned another communications outage hit this Denver-area air traffic control facility Monday. The controller recovered via the emergency procedures that they have, and I believe it was down for approximately two minutes. And the FAA says in that Colorado outage, no aircraft were in danger, no flights were delayed. The work to improve the situation at the facility in Philadelphia is ongoing. And Department of Transportation officials are entering their third day of meetings with the nation's airlines over cutting flights at Newark to reduce delays there.
