What good is that if no one can afford to live here? But local issues aren't the only focus this year. The Israel-Palestine conflict has taken center stage. Mamdani is an outspoken supporter of Palestine, a stance that might have sunk his chances with a divided Jewish population one of the largest outside of Israel. But the war in Gaza has shifted the landscape, energizing many voters. Cuomo has seized the moment, painting Mamdani as extreme, and himself as a defender against anti-Semitism. Polls show that Cuomo is the favorite to win, but Mamdani is gaining ground fast, now trailing by just a few points. The winner will go on to face Eric Adams and Republican Curtis Sliva in November.
