A recent CBS News poll indicates that 55% of Americans think President Trump and the Republican Party gained more from the government shutdown agreement, while only 6% believe Democrats secured a better deal. The poll also found that many Democrats felt frustrated and dissatisfied with the outcome, saying their party compromised too much, whereas Republicans generally felt their party's actions were appropriate.

The survey further revealed that nearly two-thirds of respondents expect health insurance premiums to rise following the shutdown, but many anticipate improvements in air transportation. Dissatisfaction with both parties' handling of the shutdown was noted, with polling experts suggesting these attitudes could influence the political landscape ahead of the next midterm elections.

New poll shows how Americans feel shutdown impacted both parties

The FAA has lifted its emergency order that cut flights at 40 major airports across the country. Officials blamed air traffic controller shortages related to the government shutdown on its reduction. The agency rolled back its restrictions from 6% to 3% on Friday, citing improvements in the air traffic controller staffing situation. The number of flights canceled over the weekend was at its lowest point since the order took effect. Now, most Americans believe President Trump and Republicans got more from the government shutdown, according to the latest polling from CBS News. 55% say the President and the GOP got more of what they wanted, and just 6% think Democrats got a better deal. Now, Hampshire Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen helped Republicans end the shutdown, and she spoke about what needs to happen now on Face the Nation. We need to put the shutdown behind us in the circular firing squad, and remember why we're in this situation. We're in this situation because Donald Trump and Speaker Johnson and the Republican majorities in the House and Senate have refused to address the cost of healthcare and are trying to throw people off their healthcare. CBS News Elections and Surveys Executive Director Anthony Salvato joins us now to really get behind the numbers of what your department, what your team found. Anthony, good morning, great to see you this Monday. So how do voters feel about the agreement that was reached? Tell us more. You said the word feel, and that's always important because when I asked people, and this is by party, Democrats how they felt about the deal that ended it, the top answer was frustrated, follow closely, by dissatisfied, and that kind of puts those feelings underneath something that you mentioned there at the top, which was Democrats feel that their party compromised too much in ending this, and Republicans say their party was just right. That's what they see coming out of this, and that's what leads to that thing you mentioned before, which is that people feel, and even half the Democrats agree with this, that Trump and the Republicans got more of what they wanted in the deal. And then how do folks feel about how each party handled the shutdown? So the handling moved a little bit because of those Democrats being a little bit more dissatisfied with how their party handled it. So you see this increase here from when we talked to people during the shutdown versus when we went back and talked to them right after it ended, a little bit more on the negative for congressional Democrats. Now having said that, nobody likes a shutdown, right? So you get negative handling for all the players involved, but that's how people process the deal out of it. Now what does the polling show about expectations from people now that the government has reopened and both sides are talking again? So important because looking forward, look at this, almost two thirds say that they expect now health insurance premiums to increase going forward, right? So a little bit of pessimism there, but on this side they do expect air transportation to get better. Pretty comprehensive reporting in your polling. This seems to be pretty commonsensical. Was there anything that surprised you or jumped out that you didn't expect? You know, it does show you people pay attention to this. People follow this and their response very quickly after this processes in all these ways. The important thing is as you go forward now, how do they expect this to play out? And especially for Democrats, how they work with, or in many cases, Democrats want them to oppose the Trump administration and their strategies for doing that you see a lot of that frustration from their party right now. And we'll see how that carries going forward. Right, that could shape how things get ready for the midterms next year. Anthony, always great to see you. Thank you very much. Thank you.
