A new art project in one of the Portuguese capital's best-known social housing districts is depicting people's life stories on walls. The initiative, inspired by the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, has breathed new life into the Lisbon neighborhood.

A series of murals has been installed on the facades of apartment buildings in the Zambujal area of Amadora, on the outskirts of Lisbon, Portugal. The project aims to showcase the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while reflecting the lives and stories of local residents.

Organizers involved both experienced and first-time mural artists, encouraging them to engage with the community. The initiative has brought renewed energy to the neighbourhood, with local youth trained as guides to explain the artwork and share their own experiences. The project is sustained through paid visits, supporting ongoing maintenance and youth training.

A collection of murals now decorates the facades of buildings at a housing project on the outskirts of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. The project brings colourful arts to the sides of several apartment blocks in the Zambujal area of Amadora, aiming to showcase the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals while also drawing a link with the lives of local people. We went in search of artists, artists not only of urban art, artists who many times had never painted on a wall, but we challenged them to participate in this project, to have this opening to get to know the stories of the neighbourhood, to get to know the people of the neighbourhood, in the end, to feel the essence of the neighbourhood and from there to be able to unite the objectives to the stories of the people of the neighbourhood. Residents say the initiative has breathed new life into the neighbourhood. Local guides have been providing explanations of the characters rendered in the murals. Being sustainable, the visits have a cost, so that with that cost we are able to maintain this project over time. And also because we are giving, we want to give training to the young people of the neighbourhood, because for us the young people of the neighbourhood are the people who know the neighbourhood better and it makes perfect sense for them to be the guides who can tell the stories of the neighbourhood, but also tell their own stories. The UN's Sustainable Development Goals were adopted in 2015 as a plan of action for a better future. Gender equality, good health, water and sanitation, ending poverty and hunger are some of the main topics they aim to call attention to.
