A new law in Las Vegas, Assembly Bill 6, will double fines for speeding, illegal U-turns, and other traffic violations in school zones starting July 1, 2026. The legislation also gives schools and local governments more authority to design school zones to better protect students.

Local leaders and community members, including grandparents of students, have expressed support for the law following reports that 206 students in Clark County were hit in school zones since August. Officials hope the increased penalties and new measures will lead to a significant decrease in such incidents.

School safety is on the top of mind for many here in our valley. Local leaders saying that a new law increasing fines for traffic violations in school zones will make schools safer for everyone. Do you think that will help? I do. I can't imagine anybody to be against something like that. This is chris Ackerman. He has seven grandkids. They're going to school. So when I told them just this school year since august, 206 students across clark County have been hit in school zones from six a.m. To six p.m. He was shocked. What's your reaction to seeing so many kids getting hit walking to and from school? Just shouldn't happen. That's so sad. Is that a big concern for you hearing that kids are getting hit knowing that your seven grandkids are right in the mix? Yeah. So I hadn't thought about that before, but yeah, you would hate to see him have an accident like that. That would be bad. But local leaders say the new safety improvements and a new law will help keep kids safe. How early do you think we're actually going to see a change though? And the numbers drop. We, we should start seeing a change tomorrow. I mean, people need to be aware. We shouldn't have to have a law to make sure that people are following the law. Thursday, C. C. S. D. Superintendent joan Ebert joined Governor Lombardo and many local leaders in a ceremonial signing of Assembly Bill six. Now that bill passed through last month's special session starting july 1st, 2026. It will double the fines for speeding, illegal U turns and other traffic violations in school zones.
