The deployment is part of the larger Gang Suppression Force, approved by the UN in October 2023, with the goal of stabilizing the government and restoring security for the Haitian people.

Officials report that the mission has achieved some successes against gangs, but results remain mixed. The Gang Suppression Force has pledged to continue operations until Haiti is secure and able to hold free and credible national elections, as gangs currently control about 85% of the capital's territory.

These Kenyan police officers have just arrived in Haiti. They are part of the multinational UN-backed support mission for local police forces, launched in 2023. On 1 October, the UN approved a much larger international security mission, called the Gang Suppression Force. We have enabled well-synchronised operations that have dealt significant blows to the gangs tormenting this nation. This unity of purpose has been essential in mobilising all available resources toward a single objective, the stability of the government, restoring security and dignity to the Haitian people. There will be no refuge left for those who choose to oppress and terrorise the innocent population of Haiti. The mission's results are so far mixed. But the force remains determined to achieve its targets. We will not rest as GSF until our shared goal is achieved, a secure Haiti capable of conducting free, fair and credible national elections. Support gangs currently control about 85% of territory in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti.
