Stoltenberg's call comes at a critical time for NATO, highlighting the organization's challenges in ensuring collective defense and stability in Europe and beyond.



NATO turns 75 in shadow of Ukraine war, Trump

It's no secret Donald Trump is not a fan of NATO. NATO was busted until I came along. And with the prospect of Trump returning to the White House, current NATO leaders are trying to plan ahead. NATO Chief Jens Stoltenberg has proposed a 100 billion euro five-year fund for Ukraine, seen as a way to Trump-proof this military support. We must ensure reliable and predictable security assistance to Ukraine for a long haul. We are transforming NATO's comprehensive assistance package into a multi-year program of assistance. Trump has been historically cozy with Vladimir Putin. And last month, he startled allies when he said any NATO country not meeting its financial obligations would not get US help if Russia threatened them. No, I would not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want. You got to pay. You got to pay your bills. In what is also seen as a preemptive move, there has been a steep increase in NATO countries meeting the spending target of 2% of GDP on defence. In 2014, there were only three allies at 2%. Now there are, in 24, there's likely to be about 20. So I think the Europeans have turned a corner. And that might help mitigate the effect of such comments and Trump's potential position. Stoltenberg's proposal also envisions NATO taking more control from a US-led coalition to coordinate arms supplies to Ukraine. He argues this could help insulate from any political changes in NATO countries.

The Pentagon is urging Japan and Australia to clarify what role they would play if the U.S and China went to war over Taiwan, the Financial Times is reporting. According to the newspaper, the reported request caught Japan and Australia 'off-guard'.
