Lovell, Frank Borman, and William Anders were the first three men to ever leave the Earth's orbit and circle the moon. Sometimes I'll look back and say, you know, how do we ever do that? They snapped this famous photo, Earthrise, as they orbited the moon. And Lovell broadcast from space on Christmas Eve, reading from the Bible. And God called the light day, and the darkness he called night. Lovell wasn't done beating the odds. He also flew on the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission, which had to abort plans to land on the moon after an explosion in an oxygen tank. Houston, we have a problem. Tom Hanks played Lovell in the movie, Apollo 13. In an all-time cameo, when Hanks, playing Lovell, arrives back safely on a Navy ship, the captain whom Hanks salutes was played by Jim Lovell.
