In response, President Trump threatened to initiate an investigation into government subsidies received by Musk's companies. The Department for Government Efficiency, previously headed by Musk, is now at the center of the dispute. Trump claimed that without federal support, Musk's businesses could be forced to close.

Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa, the President claimed.
