A small commuter jet crashed in a suburban San Diego neighbourhood, resulting in multiple fatalities among those on board. Surveillance footage showed the aircraft overturning and exploding, causing fires that destroyed homes and vehicles. Jet fuel and burning debris spread through the area, requiring additional firefighters to respond.

About 100 people were evacuated from what is described as one of the largest military housing units in the world. Local officials reported that no residents from the housing units were seriously injured or transported from the scene. All known fatalities at the time were individuals who had been on the plane.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the aircraft involved was a Cessna Citation II carrying six people. Among the victims was music executive Dave Shapiro, who owned the plane and was a licensed pilot. It is not confirmed if he was piloting the aircraft at the time of the crash.

The twin-engine jet departed from a private airport in Teterboro, New Jersey, with a refueling stop in Wichita, Kansas, before heading towards San Diego. The crash occurred just across a highway from the intended destination. The aircraft reportedly struck power lines before crashing, and authorities are still searching for the flight data recorder.

Aviation safety experts indicated that weather conditions, such as significant fog and low visibility, may have contributed to the accident. Witnesses in the air described almost complete fog, suggesting the pilot may not have seen the ground prior to impact.

By the light of day, the devastation was clear. With the jet fuel going down the street and everything on fire all at once, it was pretty horrific to see. About a hundred people were evacuated from one of the largest military housing units in the world. No one was transported from the scene from any of the housing units. All the fatalities right now look to be that they're from the plane. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Cessna Citation II had six people on board. And music executive Dave Shapiro, the owner of the plane and a licensed pilot, was one of the fatalities. It's not known if he was at the controls.
