Arizbeth Munoz, a 39-year-old mother from San Diego, survived a rare and life-threatening case of necrotizing fasciitis, which resulted in the amputation of her arms and legs. After her story was shared publicly, community donations surged to support her recovery and medical expenses not covered by insurance.

Munoz recently received a prosthetic right arm, allowing her to regain some independence and perform daily tasks, such as transferring herself and using her wheelchair. She looks forward to further rehabilitation, including being fitted for leg prosthetics, and cherishes the ability to hug her children again.

I feel this is my new beginning. A long-anticipated moment for Logan Heights' mother, who survived a life-altering battle with flesh-eating disease. In June, we first spoke to Arizbeth Munoz, who suffered amputations of her arms and legs. What followed was an outpouring of support from ABC 10 News viewers. Tonight, ABC 10 News reporter Michael Chen follows through with a long-awaited milestone in her recovery. Nearly a year after her harrowing medical journey began, I met up with Arizbeth Munoz and she hasn't stopped smiling for the past 40 minutes since she was fitted with a prosthetic. Munoz's smile also widened right before she did something she never thought she would ever be able to do. Transfer herself from a bed to her wheelchair thanks to her new prosthetic right arm. Minutes later, another first. Munoz using the wheelchair by herself. Very happy. I'm very happy. I first met Munoz in June. I saw my legs and my arms. As she recounted the moment, she woke up from a coma and saw the gangrene. Last December, a pain in her side and vomiting sent her to the ER. There, she tested positive for the flu and group A strep bacteria, a common bacteria which in rare cases can trigger sepsis and flesh-eating necrotizing fasciitis. Munoz developed both. Remarkably, she survived. Under the knee. But the battle left her with amputations in her arms and legs. The 39-year-old mom has two autistic sons. Right after her story aired, donations poured into a GoFundMe campaign which climbed from $500 to more than $57,000. I was crying because I can't believe it. The funds helping her with a mountain of costs not covered by insurance. In the past month, she suffered several setbacks including additional infections. But at last, a step forward in the form of a prosthetic arm. What does this give you? This gives me independence. Munoz says she's most looking forward to chasing after her kids at the playground and something else. You mentioned that you would now be able to hug your kids. Yes. Like how? It means a great victory for me. Munoz will be fitted for leg prosthetics in a few weeks. She's also hoping her healing will eventually allow for a bionic arm with a hand. In the meantime, she can't stop thinking about what she is now able to do. I feel this is my new beginning. Michael Chen, ABC 10 News.
