Residents in the buffer zone express concerns about the ongoing military presence and the complexities of living in a region marked by historical divisions. The outcome of the election could influence Moldova's prospects for European Union integration, as the pro-European party seeks to maintain its majority.

Hidden behind these trees, Russian soldiers monitor crossings into Transnistria. The self-proclaimed republic is just a few kilometres away. On the banks of the Dniester, locals live in a buffer zone. I feel safe here, but we see military vehicles everywhere. When we take the ferry, soldiers are present, and not everybody is comfortable with that. Transnistria, led by pro-Russian separatist authorities, declared independence in 1990, sparking a deadly conflict. In this village, residents fought to avoid falling under Moscow's control. Ahead of the legislative elections, people must again decide between a pro-Western path or renewed ties with Russia. Everyone has their own opinion and way of thinking. Some want one thing, others the opposite. Above all, we hope for peace. Here the population is mostly pro-European. Transnistria's status remains unresolved and continues to affect families living in the grey zone. Administratively, it's very complicated. We belong to everyone and no one at the same time. We remain in a conflict zone. Half of Dniester is ours, the other half is not. To document Moldova's complex history, photographer Viktor Organ travels through villages, searching for old family photographs. With so many different regimes and divisions in society, people know little of the true history. I explain lost traditions and stories to help them reflect. The pro-European party hopes to retain its absolute majority. If defeated, Moldova's integration into the European Union could be called into question.
