The initiative is part of a broader effort to address rising gun violence and juvenile involvement in homicides, particularly in Kansas City, which experienced its deadliest year in 2023.

The bill is supported by local prosecutors as a tool for law enforcement and is being introduced alongside other gun control measures, such as a proposed ban on Glock switches. Missouri's General Assembly is set to reconvene on January 7th to consider these and other pre-filed bills.

Yeah, there's some gun legislation to watch in Missouri's upcoming legislative session. As your Kansas City reporter, I've been keeping my eye on pre file bills that would have an impact on the city. But this bill will crack down on minors possessing firearms across the state of Missouri. 631 pre file bills and counting in the house with about a month until Missouri lawmakers reconvened for the 2026 legislative session. The inspiration behind this bill essentially is trying to make sure that our juvenile population, particularly in Kansas City, is safe. In his final term, Representative Mark Sharp has part of his focus on gun legislation, like House Bill 18 oh six spurred by loose constitutional carry laws. The Legislature passed in 2016 too many instances where law enforcement may see the print of a firearm being concealed. Uh, but lights the citation lacks the citation to be able to really do anything about it. That is when we really started to see our community suffer 130 homicides up to 140 homicides in, um, you know, 2023 are most daily year yet. 183 K. C. P. D. Data shows minors account for 8% of this year's homicides. 8% might seem small. The fact that 8% of the homicides have occurred involving a juvenile. That is a statistic that should make us all sit up. Prosecutor Johnson says this legislation would be another useful tool for police. If we're going to talk about public safety, if we're going to talk about crime reduction, we have to talk about gun loss. Representative Sharp will be looking for bipartisan support, keeping in mind what it took to penalize celebratory gunfire in Missouri with Blair's law. It took 10 years to pass Blair's law. I hope it doesn't take that long to pass other life saving measures. This is a month for pre filing bills. Representative Mark Sharp told me he's also drafting a bill that would ban Glock switches.
