A New Year's Day storm turned into a nightmare for Mission Hills residents and business owners as flooding caused thousands of dollars in damage to homes, businesses, and streets.

A significant rainstorm in Mission Hills, Los Angeles, led to several feet of flooding at the corner of Arroyo and State Street, impacting local businesses and residences. Business owners reported never having seen such severe flooding before, with mud and contaminated water inundating properties and causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Residents, including Samantha Ciders, were forced out of their homes, which became uninhabitable within minutes as water rushed in. The cause of the flooding remains unclear, though neighbors noted that street drains required clearing by the fire department and questioned whether nearby construction may have played a role. Cleanup and insurance claims are ongoing.

Neighbors and business owners in this area say they've never seen it flood like this before. Pretty well covered in mud here. Stephen Alberts walked me into his video production business in Mission Hills just a day after a rainstorm led to several feet of flooding. This video is from Rewind Skin, the aesthetics business next door. The water several feet high, forcing its way inside. The water came into the studios. It's covered. Everything in there was under three feet of muddy, contaminated water. This is what it looked like inside Rewind Skin next door after the water receded, mud still covering every inch of the business. And I was like, Oh, my God, very overwhelming. Um, because I mean, this is still fairly very new. We just opened up in April outside on State Street. The cleanup continues as the mud dries up. Cars still parked on the street show just how bad it was. Happy New Year to me. I woke up to the sound of rushing water. Samantha Ciders lives next to both businesses. This was the water rushing into her home. She says it happened in a matter of minutes early Thursday morning, waiting to see what happens next. As of right now, this is completely uninhabitable. It's unclear what led to so much flooding. But neighbors say the drains on the street had to be cleared by the fire department, and many are wondering if construction nearby had anything to do with it. There's still a puddle of water over here. For now, the cleanup continues trying to get the remediation team in as soon as possible to start drying everything out and file insurance claims.
