While Pride month is most often known as June, one group is celebrating the LGBTQ community next month while also focusing on people of color in the community. FOX 9's Maury Glover has the story.

Minnesota People of Color Pride, established in 1999, is organizing a series of LGBTQ pride events that specifically celebrate and empower people of color in the community. The group was formed in response to a lack of representation at mainstream pride events and offers culturally specific food, music, and entertainment at its gatherings.

Despite challenges in securing funding, as many organizations prioritize donations to larger pride events, Minnesota People of Color Pride continues its mission to foster inclusivity and awareness. The annual events attract thousands and aim to create a safe and welcoming environment for the BIPOC LGBTQ community.

Well, Pride Month may be over, but that doesn't mean all Pride events are done for the summer. In fact, one group is gearing up for its celebration of the local LGBTQ community next month. As Maury Glover shows us, Minnesota People of Color Pride has been empowering its community for nearly three decades. Every year, Twin Cities Pride attracts more than a half million people to celebrate the local LGBTQ community. And for nearly 30 years, there has been another organization that helps people of color show their gay pride as well. Gay people who are marginalized, who may not want to come out to make a pride, who don't identify as, you know, gay, they may be they-them. Minnesota People of Color Pride was formed in 1999 after several members of the African American community became frustrated by a lack of representation at mainstream pride. The group now holds its own pride events in August with culturally specific food, music, and entertainment, so members of their community can celebrate their way. We want to be an option for everyone to make sure that if you come out, you'll find somebody that looks or maybe thinks like you. With a couple of thousand people attending its events each year, Minnesota People of Color Pride says it can be a struggle to find funding because many companies and organizations give to Twin Cities Pride instead. But the group says its mission to create a more inclusive community is worth more than dollars and cents. What I'm trying to raise more than money is awareness. And they hope that awareness will continue to help create a safe space for the Twin Cities BIPOC community to embrace its gay pride for years to come. This one day I can go through and I don't have to worry about somebody judging me. I know tomorrow I got to go back to real life, but this one day I want to be me all day long. This year's Black LGBTQ Pride events start on August 14th and wrap up with Pride in the Park at Powderhorn Park on August 17th.
