French authorities are clearing the streets of Paris in preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games, according to NGO Le Rever de la Médaille. The organization reported that 12,500 people have been displaced from tent cities and squats in the past year—a 40% increase from the same period two years ago. At a press conference, migrants and Roma affected by the clearances shared their experiences.

Roma mother Laura described sleeping outdoors in parks with her four children as very difficult. Jocelyne from the Democratic Republic of Congo, who declined to be on camera, reported her child developing asthma due to living on the streets. Despite their hardships, the migrants voiced concerns about their futures and requested solutions to their predicament.

The evictions have been supported by a new law passed in 2023, which imposes significant fines and prison sentences for illegal occupations. The move affected at least 3,000 people last year, a Reuters investigation revealed. Authorities, however, denied that the evictions were linked to the upcoming Olympic Games, stating that many displaced individuals were offered accommodations in other parts of France as part of a broader initiative to clear the streets of the Paris region.

Paul Alorzy, spokesperson for the NGO, expressed concern that tourists will see a "postcard Paris" at the cost of displacing some of the city's vulnerable residents. The Olympic Games are scheduled to commence on July 26.

I'm with my children in the park, I sleep with them outdoors and it's very difficult for me. Jocelyne, who declined to be on camera, is from the Democratic Republic of Congo. I have two children and because we're living on the streets, one fell ill with asthma. So it's very difficult for me with the Olympic Games. We do all of our activities in Paris, what will become of us now? Can anybody find a solution for us? The clearing up of squats was facilitated by a new law passed in 2023, which also imposes large fines and prison sentences for illegal occupation. At least 3,000 people were affected by squat closures last year, according to a Reuters investigation. Authorities have denied the squat evictions were connected to the Olympic Games. Many were offered places in other parts of France, following a push by the government this year to clear the streets of the Paris region. The NGO's spokesperson Paul Alorzy says tourists this summer will experience a, quote, postcard Paris, with new cycling lanes and rebuilt sites. However, he says, the cost of this is the displacement of some vulnerable inhabitants. The Olympic Games will start on July 26th.
