Overtourism protests moved outside of Europe this summer, as residents of Mexico City took to the streets to march against rising costs of living in neighborhoods popular with digital nomads and international visitors.

Residents of Mexico City have begun protesting against the effects of overtourism, joining similar movements seen in European cities such as Barcelona and Mallorca. Locals report that the influx of international travelers and digital nomads has led to rising living costs, making some neighborhoods unaffordable for long-term residents.

The protests are growing in both size and frequency, with demonstrators calling for more equitable policies to balance the interests of residents and visitors. While experts note that protests alone are unlikely to reduce tourist numbers significantly, they can raise public awareness and pressure governments to implement measures such as tourist taxes, visitor caps, and timed entry to attractions. However, experts caution that meaningful change requires consistent government action, not just symbolic policies.

You may recall some of those headlines from last summer that showed protesters in Barcelona targeting travelers with none other than squirt guns. Well those protesters back again this summer as they were in the Spanish island of Mallorca with their water guns I might add. We also saw demonstrations for over tourism breaking out in Italy Portugal and now across the pond over in North America Mexico City with residents. They're saying some neighborhoods that are popular with digital nomads and international travelers are leading to writing costs rising costs and in some cases making their own neighborhoods too expensive for them to live. Now these protests I learned from a story that we published on CNBC dot com this morning are increasing. That's both in frequency and in size. And there's a few reasons for this. One these residents they got a taste of their cities during covid without any tourists. And they also hope that that pause that the pandemic brought would bring their cities to create some more equitable policies that would balance the interest between residents and travelers. Now we'll hope for that in many cases lost. Now they're angry. One researcher telling me residents that live in cities that are plagued by over tourism don't typically start out this way. In fact they tolerate many aspects of over tourism. Then they complain and when they feel that their voices aren't heard then they turn to some of the confrontations that we're seeing today. It's back to you. Monica is there any evidence that these protests are working. Well Emily it really depends on what the goal is here. So if the goal is to reduce the number of travelers coming to the city we can see some evidence that this works but only in the short term. So we can look to Spain where we saw numerous demonstrations last year. Well arrivals up 4 percent this year. We can also see though experts saying this is actually not typically the main goal of these protests. Really what they want is public awareness awareness that then leads to pressure pressure on local governments to act. Now this can in fact work and it has in places like Barcelona as well as Amsterdam. However another researcher from the European Tourism Futures Institute told me it can also lead to ad hoc policies that end up being more symbolic than they are meaningful. Now all of the experts that I spoke to for the story that we published today said protests alone not enough government action is required to institute what's called managed tourism. This may include things like tourist taxes also visitor caps and as well as timed entry to attractions. Now one person said it's not as fun. It's definitely not the serendipity that we once knew of travel many years ago. However it is worth it rather than spending a good part of your vacation standing around in lines or crowds.
