A Mexican beauty influencer, Valeria Marquez, was shot and killed during a TikTok livestream, according to prosecutors in Mexico's Jalisco state. Marquez, aged 23, was killed at the beauty salon where she worked in the city of Zapopan. Just prior to the shooting, Marquez was seen on TikTok holding a stuffed toy and mentioning that someone was coming. A voice called out to her before she muted the livestream, after which the shooting occurred. 

Following the incident, someone took her phone, momentarily showing their face on the livestream before it ended. Authorities have not named any suspects in connection with the case. The Jalisco state prosecutor has stated that the death is being investigated as femicide, defined as the killing of women or girls based on gender.

Marquez was known for her beauty videos and had nearly 200,000 followers across Instagram and TikTok. Earlier in the livestream, she mentioned that an individual had previously come to the salon with an expensive gift when she was not present and expressed concern about the situation, indicating she did not intend to wait for the person to return. According to the United Nations, Mexico, along with Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia, had the fourth highest femicide rates in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2023, with 1.3 deaths per 100,000 women.

She had said earlier on the live stream that someone came to the salon when she was not there with an expensive gift to deliver to her. She appeared concerned and said she was not planning to wait for the person to come back. The Jalisco state prosecutor said in a statement on Tuesday that her death is being investigated as femicide, the killing of women or girls based on gender. Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia share the fourth highest femicide rates in Latin America and the Caribbean, with 1.3 deaths per 100,000 women in 2023, according to the UN.
