Melbourne's troubled West Gate Tunnel will finally be ready to welcome motorists on Sunday. The project, which is three years overdue, provides another major road link between the city's booming western suburbs and the CBD.

The Westgate Tunnel in Melbourne is nearing completion, with officials highlighting its potential to significantly improve travel for up to 65,000 vehicles daily. The 6.8-kilometer tunnel and 9.2 kilometers of elevated roads are expected to reduce commute times from the outer west by up to 20 minutes and ease pressure on the Westgate Bridge.

Despite facing a $4.7 billion budget overrun and a three-year delay due to the discovery of toxic soil, the $10.2 billion project will soon open progressively overnight. Standard tolls will be around $4 per car trip, with free travel offered on weekends in January. Drivers are advised to exercise caution as they adjust to the new road network.

We've stayed the course because we know how incredibly important this project is to the future of Melbourne and Victoria as a whole. The tunnel will be open progressively overnight and for the first few weeks and months drivers are being urged to be extra careful when going through here to get used to this new network of roads. And if your car does break down in the tunnel, stay calm and stay where you are. Yeah, absolutely. The most critical thing is stay in your vehicle.
