Trev, the pianoman, is one of the last five pub pianists in England. He's keeping alive a 160-year-old tradition, one that originally marked the end of a hard day's work. The original pub pianist, his job was working in some of the hardest working areas of the UK. And the guy plays the piano and he lifts their hearts, lifts their spirits, and they have fun. Trev can handle the quirkiest pianos. His superpower is turning pop songs into pub songs. These days he knows 4,500 tunes by heart, from Coldplay to Queen. Bohemian Rhapsody. Yeah, all the pub piano versions. Tonight, he's at the Bootlegger, a cosy pub in the heart of Exeter, part of his current England tour. He played his first gig at 16. The only way legally I could get into a pub was to claim that the landlord of the pub was my father. So before I turned 18, I had nine different fathers in nine different pubs. These days, Trev usually brings his own electronic piano, ready for any song request. I love Rocketman by Elton John. Elton John's Rocketman. We're just mesmerized by how happy and, like, energized he is playing. It's really, like, contagious. A common reaction among young people who stumble across Trev for the first time. I want to try and encourage younger people to take it up, so I'm not the last one. I don't want to be the last one. Trev the Piano Man is keeping this part of British pub culture alive, spreading joy over a pint or two, or three.
