On the second day of his administration, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the formation of the Office of Mass Engagement. This new office is designed to organize citywide participation, proactively reach excluded communities, and ensure that public feedback is directly incorporated into policy-making and service delivery.

Mayor Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, emphasized his commitment to grassroots governance and maintaining his political ideals while serving all New Yorkers. In addition to this announcement, he signed several executive orders focused on affordable housing and reversed executive orders issued by former Mayor Eric Adams after his federal indictment.

The Democratic Socialist has now pledged to be a mayor for all New Yorkers while staying true to his political beliefs. Earlier, he announced the Office of Mass Engagement in an effort to hear directly from his constituents. The Office of Mass Engagement will organize participation across this city, proactively reach those that have been excluded, and ensure that public feedback is embedded directly into how we design policies, deliver services, and make decisions. CBS News political reporter Zach Hudak joins me now with more on this. Zach, so how does that new office fit in with Zoran Mamdani's overall priorities as mayor? Chanel, I think that new office is really a continuation of what you and I were talking about earlier today, that in his speech yesterday, Mayor Mamdani really zeroed in on reassuring his constituents that even though he's coming in now as mayor and will have to get things done, and is taking steps to make peace with his enemies—we saw him meet last month with President Trump, the biggest boogeyman of all of the far left—he's trying to reassure his constituents that he is still a Democratic Socialist. He said that in his speech yesterday. He said that he will not shy away from those ideals out of fear of being painted a radical. So I think this is really just the natural next step in that. This is him saying, I ran a grassroots campaign, and I'm going to run City Hall in a grassroots manner. I'm going to listen to what the little people have to say. And we also know Mamdani's already signed some executive orders in his short time in office. What were some of the first actions as mayor? Three of those executive orders focused on affordable housing. One of them revamps the mayor's office that deals with that. Two of the others work on units that will work to build new affordable housing and make it available to New Yorkers. The fourth executive order, though, that he signed, I think, is actually the most interesting. It came not long after he had just been commending outgoing Mayor Eric Adams in his speech. And what that final order did, it undid any executive order that Eric Adams signed since he was federally indicted in the fall. So it was quite the pat on the back and then slap in the face from the incoming mayor to the outgoing mayor. OK, Zach Hudak, thank you.
