More than a thousand residents have been evacuated from the path of wildfires burning in California that have now reached the edge of the Interstate 5 highway. Authorities say windy, hot weather is expected to fan the flames this week.

Firefighters are battling against high winds, hot temperatures, and dry brush to control a significant wildfire raging north of Los Angeles. The fire has swiftly spread to over 500 hectares, posing severe challenges for those on the front lines. The blaze, which originated near the community of Gorman, has reached the edge of Interstate 5, a crucial highway connecting northern and southern California.

Evacuation orders have been issued for more than 1,200 residents as the situation continues to escalate. Local authorities reported that the fire's size and intensity increased dramatically within hours, prompting immediate evacuation. The sheriff emphasized the urgency of the threat, advising residents to leave promptly for their safety.

Compounding the challenge are weather conditions that are expected to deteriorate, with forecasts predicting gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour. This concerning development comes early in the fire season, raising alarms about what may be ahead. Additionally, extreme weather patterns are affecting other parts of the United States, including an intense heatwave in the central and southern regions and a heat dome anticipated to form over the east and midwest.

We have warm conditions and winds that are unpredictable. In just a matter of hours, this grass fire nearly tripled in size to more than 500 hectares. We're on scene of the post-incident Los Angeles County community of Gorman. Flames came right to the edge of Interstate 5, a major highway that connects the states north and south. So far, more than 1,200 people have been evacuated from the area. We saw the smoke coming up, but it wasn't that bad yet. And then, you know, eventually we were like, we don't think it's safe. The sheriff was just like, you guys got to go. In worse news, a week of humid and windy weather is on the way, with gusts of almost 90 kilometres an hour expected in parts of the state tomorrow, all while still early in the fire season. This is definitely early. There's definitely a concern. This is not a great sign. There's more extreme weather on the way for the rest of the country too, with an intense heatwave already roasting America's centre and south, while an expansive heat dome is set to build over the east and midwest in the next few days.
