An accordion in a classical orchestra? This for some might seem unusual. But for Martinis Levitskis, it's just the beginning. The young Lithuanian is one of the world's most sought-after accordionists. I always say that accordion is like a magic box of tricks. It is a mysterious instrument and I love playing my cards on it, always trying to intrigue people about it. And he's doing just that, here at the Rheingau Music Festival in Wiesbaden, Germany, one of Europe's largest classical music festivals. I like bringing this instrument to that sweet spot for people that inflicts a bit of nostalgia in a way, but also offers a complete different spectrum of sounds and characters. I played a concert with a DJ, I played a concert alone, I played a concert in a duet with organ in a church, I played a concert in a duet with violin. Martinis was born in 1990 and grew up in a small town in Lithuania, initially wanting to learn the piano. But pianos were expensive, so his godfather gave him a small accordion instead. And I was immediately drawn by it and very curious about the mechanics. I didn't have a teacher, I had to teach myself. I had to really listen, I had to invent things on this instrument. It wasn't long before his talent was discovered through competitions and performances on TV. By the age of 20, he even became the accordion world champion and won on the TV show Lithuania's Got Talent, launching his international career. When I open the case of my instrument and I take the instrument on me, it's always exciting and energizing to explore and to challenge the instrument, yourself, the music, the listener. Today Martinis is breaking musical boundaries, combining classical music with pop or tango. He wants to bring the accordion out of its niche and even reinvent it. The world is his stage, whether it's outdoors or with an orchestra in renowned concert halls. It was just amazing. I never thought it could hold its own so well against such a powerful orchestra. It was surprising to hear an accordion this way. I associated it with folk music, but not classical. It was a completely new experience. His accordion is no lightweight, weighing in at 18 kilos. But that is a complete zero for me when I'm on stage, because I'm so in love with this instrument. And he brings this passion to the stage, alongside renowned conductor Omer Meir Velber, who also plays the accordion. He uses the instrument in a very kind of delicate way, which I have to say I find very special, because accordion has the tendency to, of course, to become like an organ, which is one of the qualities of the accordion. But he somehow has the courage to make it very delicate, and I think this is quite an interesting style. A crowning achievement for Martinis Levitskis and his first love. I think the accordion still has a long way to go. So therefore, when I feel it, and I start to feel it more and more from people trusting the instrument, trusting me as a performer behind that instrument, so that's only a good feeling and good perspective for the future.
