Multiple Republican senators and representatives have publicly opposed the Department of Justice's criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. Senator Tom Tillis has threatened to block any future Federal Reserve nominees from the Trump administration until the investigation concludes, citing concerns over the central bank's independence.

Other lawmakers, including Senators Kevin Cramer and Lisa Murkowski, as well as House panel chair French Hill, have also criticized the probe, calling it coercive and a distraction. The investigation has led to heightened frustration among Republicans, who worry about its impact on the Federal Reserve's ability to operate independently.

So many Republicans are not happy with the DOJ opening a criminal investigation into Powell. At least one of them, Senator Tom Tillis, he's threatening to hold up any of Trump's future Fed nominees until the investigation ends. Tillis said in a statement that quote, if there were any remaining doubts whether advisors within the Trump administration are actively pushing to end the independence of the Federal Reserve, there should now be none. Remember, Tillis sits on the banking committee. That's the one that votes on Fed nominees. That means if he and all Democrats vote together, they can bring any new Fed nominees to a standstill. And it's not just Tillis who's upset. Senator Kevin Cramer, who's also on the banking committee, told me that Powell is a bad chair, but not a criminal, and called for the investigation to be put to rest quickly. And Melissa Murkowski called the investigation quote, an attempt of coercion. And she said that Congress should investigate the DOJ for opening up this investigation into Powell. Over in the House, the chair of the House panel that oversees the Fed, his name's French Hill. He said the investigation quote, creates an unnecessary distraction. And he added that this action could undermine this and future administration's ability to make sound monetary policy decisions. It's unclear exactly what Congress can do at this point, besides halting some of those potential Fed nominees once Trump makes them, once there are openings. But there's definitely a lot of frustration on Capitol Hill from Republicans about what this is going to mean for the independence of the Fed.
