The longstanding community in Port Charlotte, where Canadians make up 40% of homeowners, has felt some strain due to political tensions, including threats of tariffs and annexation.

Some Canadians are taking extra precautions, such as removing identifying license plates, and are choosing to support the Canadian economy by bringing more supplies from home. However, for many, the appeal of the Florida lifestyle continues to outweigh current political issues, and they have not changed their travel plans.

A right on Niagara, a left on Sherbrooke. If it wasn't for these palm trees. You could be in any town or city in Canada. But this is the Sunshine State. In a community many snowbirds have called home since the 1970s. Florida is no stranger to Canadians. It's one of the top destinations for snowbirds. And in this community, the ties are exceptionally close and obvious. It's Canadians created this park and it's always been a collaboration between both of us and that's what makes this park so special. For years, Canadians and Americans have coexisted here. 40% of homeowners are Canucks. But that special relationship feeling some strain amid threats of tariffs and annexation. The most recent tourism data from Florida shows a 20% drop in Canadian visitors compared to the same time last year. Jeff Papias of Ontario has been coming here for more than 30 years. It doesn't override the reasons and the rationale of why they're here. They are concerned in watching what's happening because when there is that uncertainty, there is a little discomfort under that. That tension also seen in other ways. And has this Ontario man taking extra precautions. We've heard stories about people being identified as Canadian and their cars being targeted. So when we cross the border, what we do do is take the front license plate off. Conte will keep wintering in the U.S. but is doing his part to support Canada. We did come down this year with so many more supplies that we would normally buy here. We'll put the money back into Canada as opposed to the States. When we bought, we bought with the intention of having a lifestyle. And Murray Knights has been enjoying that here since 2010, even as others boycott the U.S. To date, we haven't decided to make any change.
