That home once belonged to prominent Jewish leader Alex Rivkin. The fact that the targets were selected, it shows how heinous and serious these crimes are. The court heard Mule was recruited by his neighbour and co-accused Leon Sofilis to carry out a string of hate crimes that included ten swastikas spray-painted on a Newtown synagogue a week prior, and that same day in Queen's Park, the vandalism of five vehicles and two houses with offensive graffiti. But Mule's motivation, a court heard in July, wasn't fuelled by hatred or religious beliefs but money in the bank and was granted bail. How much will you pay? Um, I'd rather not. Sofilis already behind bars, convicted in September. Mule today sentenced to a backdated seven months, five non-parole, that expired two weeks ago. It seems to overlook the gravity of the crime. The magistrate acknowledged the risk of Mule re-offending, but it was low. His guilty plea and letter of apology pointed to promising signs of rehabilitation. The acts which were designed to menace and terrorise, which could have killed people, that's what's important here, not the words of contrition that are uttered after the fact and after the conviction.
