Isaac Costa, aged 31, appeared in the Sydney Supreme Court for sentencing following the death of Anastasia Slashton in 2023. Prosecutors described the incident as a frenzied attack after Costa was rejected by Slashton during a night out at the Greystanes Hotel. 

The defence argued that Costa was not motivated by anger or jealousy and claimed Slashton was the aggressor. The court also heard that Slashton had recently moved to Australia from Russia and was wearing a valuable bracelet gifted by Costa. The sentencing is scheduled for the following week.

31-year-old Isaac Costa was infatuated with Anastasia Slashton, the Crown Prosecutor told the Sydney Supreme Court. But after he was rejected by her during a boozy night out at the Greystanes Hotel in 2023, he bashed her to death. The ferocity of this attack, the injuries that this lady suffered, one can only imagine the force that must have been required, this can quite rightly be categorised as a frenzied attack, the Crown said. Anastasia had recently arrived in Australia from Russia in the hope of making a better life. But Costa's defence barrister rejected the killing was motivated by anger and jealousy. The picture that emerges is the aggressor is the deceased, senior counsel John Stratton said. He said Costa was calm in the back of the Uber that night, while Anastasia spoke over him saying she wanted to break up. He told his father, she started hitting me again and I lost it. I didn't mean to hit her, I just lost it and I snapped. The defence barrister told the court Costa had called Anastasia his world and earlier that month had gifted her an expensive Valentine's Day present. She was wearing the $5,000 diamond bracelet the night she was killed. Senior counsel Stratton also argued she consumed an enormous amount of alcohol which was a factor in her death. The judge said it would not have killed her. Costa will be sentenced next Friday. Sarah Navin, 10 News.
