A group home in Spring Farm, south-west of Sydney, was destroyed by a rapidly spreading fire that broke out just after midnight. One resident, David, who used a mobility scooter, died in the incident, while a carer and another resident, Steve, managed to escape and were treated for minor burns and smoke inhalation.

Firefighters took over an hour to bring the blaze under control, but the home and all possessions were lost. Authorities credit working smoke alarms for the survival of the two escapees and are investigating the cause of the fire, which escalated from a small blaze to a fatal tragedy in less than ten minutes.

Collapsing under the intense heat, a group home turned raging inferno. It's hard to believe a female carer and 55-year-old NDIS participant Steve made it out alive. An absolute mess. One was a bit dazed, obviously confused. But housemate David, in his early 60s, lived at the back with a mobility scooter and sadly, he couldn't be saved. It was David, so it was sad to see. I looked after him for five years, he's a very nice guy, friendly, we go fishing together. The history buff lived in supported, independent accommodation in Spring Farm, south-west of Sydney. But just after midnight, something went so horribly wrong. Just an inferno that happened really, really quick. We're talking less than 10 minutes for this sort of fire behaviour to occur. Flames leapt into the night sky, firefighters gaining control after more than an hour. By then, it was just too late. Every square inch gutted, every possession destroyed. It was quite large, so it could have spread quite quickly. The ceiling, the roof is on the floor, we're looking at where that started. While belongings and homes are replaceable, lives are not. David's carer Raj says he was not just a client, but a friend. They had plans to go get bacon and eggs for breakfast, and were very much looking forward to their next fishing trip in three days' time. Laughing, talking, he loves history, so always talking about history with us. Steve, who has an acquired brain injury, and his carer, treated in hospital for minor burns and smoke inhalation. Absolute miracle, and this is the smoke alarms working. But it's left authorities to work out what started as a small fire, but ended in great tragedy. Olivia Blunden, 10 News.
