The situation intensified when an elite military unit allegedly turned against the president, leading his office to claim that an illegal and forceful attempt to seize power was underway.

The protests, initially sparked by widespread power and water outages, have grown into a broader movement led by a group called Gen Z Madagascar. The country has experienced three weeks of deadly unrest, raising concerns about political stability and security.

The Trump administration is awaiting word from the Supreme Court after asking it to allow the immediate deployment of National Guard troops to Illinois to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. A lower court blocked the move.
